The History of Batley Mencap

Batley and District Mencap was formed in 1952 to provide facilities for both children and adults who had a learning disability.

Our accommodation has progressed through meetings in volunteers homes, to rented premises and then onto our present accommodation Mencap Hall, previously a Freemasons Meeting Hall, which was bequeathed to us in a local will.

Although the hall was structurally quite sound a lot of effort and money was used to bring it up to its present day standard. The building is also used by a variety of organisations and their rental contributions help us to offset the running costs of the building.

As our title suggests we not only cover provision for Batley itself but for the areas around us within roughly a five mile radius of Batley.
